Seven years ago, The Eye Institute of Salus University established a vision care program for uninsured and underinsured children in the Philadelphia area. This program is called "Looking Out for Kids" (LOFK) and its mission is to help children receive proper vision care services.
With one in four children struggling to achieve high performance in school resulting from vision problems, providing children with the opportunity for quality vision care is essential to The Eye Institute and LOFK. Additionally, most vision and eye disorders are preventable if detected early enough, making the accessibility of vision services imperative.
Every year since its creation, LOFK has expanded its reach among surrounding Philadelphia communities. Last year, LOFK reached Norristown and Conicelli Toyota of Conshohocken helped donate $5000 to demonstrate its invested interest, as a Philadelphia-area Toyota dealership, in actively engaging with the local community.
Funds donated to LOFK are disbursed in several ways. The Eye Institute sends teams to schools to hold free vision screenings, which help determine if any students need additional vision care. During the 2012-2013 academic year, approximately one third of students failed their screenings. When students fail the screening, LOFK works with the school nurses to schedule further vision care at one of three The Eye Institute locations.
