And, for comparison, here's MotorWeek's first drive of the all new 2025 Camry:
Just looking at standard safety features like anti-lock brakes, airbags, stability control, emergency braking, and lane departure warning systems, today's Camry buyer is getting a ton of features that 1983's buyer couldn't even dream of.
The 1983 version featured a 2 liter 4-cylinder engine with 92 horsepower and weighed less than 2500 pounds. Fast forward to 2025 and the base model boasts a hybrid 4-cylinder with 225 horsepower hauling about 3600 pounds. 1983's Camry did zero to sixty in 12.4 seconds compared to today's 7.8 seconds. Amazingly, the new Camry is heavier but far quicker than its 41-years-ago counterpart.
In 1983, the Camry was a competitive, competent sedan, and a great value. Forty-one years later, it's a lively, efficient, feature-packed, stylish car, still priced as competitively as ever!
